The European Union arms embargo on Sierra Leone

The European Union arms embargo on Sierra Leone

In May 1997 imposed the UN an arms embargo on Sierra Leone due to a  military coup d'état of the joint forces of military and the Revolutionary United Front (RUF) and ongoing human rights violations. UN Resolution 1132 (1997) of 8 October 1997 imposed an oil and arms embargo, as well as restrictions on the travel of members of the military junta of Sierra Leone.

UN Resolution 1171 of 5 June 1998 decided that the restrictions shall not apply to the sale or supply of arms and related material for the sole use in Sierra Leone of the Military Observer Group of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOMOG) or the United Nations.

On 29 June 1998 imposed the EU an arms embargo on Siera Leone (Common Position 98/409/CFSP).
