United Nations arms embargoes - Eritrea

United Nations arms embargoes

Ethiopia and Eritrea

In May 2000 Security Council resolution 1298 established an embargo on the sale or supply of arms and related materiel of all types, including weapons and ammunition, military vehicles and equipment, paramilitary equipment and spare parts for the aforementioned to Eritrea and Ethiopia.

The resolution also prohibited technical assistance or training related to the provision, manufacture, maintenance or use of these items.

These measures were established for a twelve month period and expired on 16 May 2001 when the Security Council acknowledged in a Statement by the President that Eritrea and Ethiopia had signed in good faith an Agreement of Cessation of Hostilities.
