2002: Kananaskis, Canada

The Summit held in Canada in June 2002 was the first after the terrorist attacks on the United States in September 2001. The discussion of security related issues were one central feature at the meeting.

At Kananaskis the leaders launched the G8 Global Partnership Against the Spread of Weapons and Materials of Mass Destruction, under which the G8 pledged to undertake cooperative projects on the basis of agreed guidelines.

The leaders agreed six Nonproliferation Principles aimed at preventing terrorists or those who harbour them from acquiring or developing nuclear, chemical, radiological and biological weapons as well as missile delivery systems for them.
