Return to G8 introduction

1996: Lyon, France

At their Summit in Lyon between 26-29 June 1996 the political discussions among leaders emphasized the need to strengthen the role of the United Nations. The main security priorities identified at the Summit were the need to make progress in the field of non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament; the need to increase the efficiency of the measures being taken both against terrorism and against transnational organized crime.

Perhaps the main focus of the discussion of the arms control discussion at the Summit was how to ensure that China would sign a comprehensive test ban treaty and fully comply with its provisions.

The Lyon Summit also discussed how to follow up the decisions taken at the special Nuclear Safety and Security Summit held between 19-20 April 1996 in Moscow.
