Database on Multilateral Peace Operations

The SIPRI database on peace operations uniquely provides transparent and reliable data on all multilateral peace operations (both UN and non-UN) conducted around the world.

Here you will find information on where an operation is located, the dates of its deployment and operation, the mission mandate, the participating countries, the approved and actual number of personnel deployed broken into personnel types, the financial costs, and the number of fatalities suffered.

The database records all peace operations according to the definitions of the SIPRI project on Multilateral Peace Operations. An explanation of our definitions and methodology is presented here.

The database currently includes over 500 peace operations in the period 2000-2008 and will be updated continually.

How to use the database

Search and Overview Page

The search page allows the user to retrieve information from the database according to the terms, words and phrases entered in the search field(s). The results of the search are then displayed on the overview page.  The results are sorted by year and by the category of the peace operation (ie UN, regional organization or ad-hoc coalition of states). However, only the most basic data is listed on this page. For further details on individual mission, click view to enter the details page.

Details Page

The details page provides a summary of in-depth data on the selected peace operation. In addition to the data presented on the overview page, information on a mission’s mandated tasks, national breakdowns of personnel numbers, the number of local support staff, and the head of mission is listed. Explanatory notes for each field / type of information are also given. If there are multiple peace operations in a given location , direct links to the other peace operation(s) are given. Details of relevant documents (eg: legal basis, progress reports, factsheets) are provided and the documents can be downloaded.

Saving and Printing the Search Result

The search results can be printed at any time. In addition, search results can be saved and exported as a Microsoft® Excel file.
