Conflict Prevention

Krusenberg Seminar on Preventing Violent Conflict

SIPRI's work on conflict prevention focuses on efforts to prevent disputes from turning violent as well as on activities to manage and resolve disputes that have resulted in armed conflict. It maintains data on a wide variety of actors involved: multilateral organizations, ad hoc coalitions of states, bi- and unilateral state initiatives and non-state actors, including NGOs and international financial institutions.

In addition to this ongoing work, research is conducted on specific issues relating to conflict prevention. The challenge of developing an international culture of conflict prevention was one area of focus during 1999-2000: SIPRI, the Swedish Foreign Ministry and the Swedish Institute of International Affairs organized a seminar entitled Preventing Violent Conflict: The Search for Political Will, Strategies and Effective Tools. It took place in Krusenberg, Sweden, in June 2000.
