Project description

The study of violent conflicts has been a standing element of SIPRI’s work since its foundation in 1966 and the Armed Conflict and Conflict Management Project provides the main forum in SIPRI for conflict-related research. The project continuously analyzes violent conflict around the world, its impact on the human security of local populations and wider political consequences. The annual chapter on trends in armed conflicts in the SIPRI Yearbook summarizes the past year’s developments, providing an analytical narrative of causes and dynamics of contemporary conflicts, as well as dominant trends within the international community to manage and resolve violent conflict.
The analysis of multilateral peace operations is another major part of the project’s work. SIPRI is unique in providing comprehensive empirical data on all UN and non-UN, multilateral peace operations around the world. This data is publicly available in the SIPRI Yearbook. A chapter examining current themes and surveying the achievements and shortcomings of multilateral peace operations is produced annually for the SIPRI Yearbook.
The project’s research takes a comprehensive approach to the study of violence and to the efforts to prevent, manage and resolve conflict. Especially attention is devoted to the situating of conflict analysis within international policy on security and development more broadly.
