Expanding the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database to include SALW
Feasibility study for expanding the SIPRI Arms Transfers Database to include SALW transfers: case study of SALW transfers to Sub-Saharan Africa.
The SIPRI Arms Transfers Database contains information on international transfers of major conventional weapons. This project explores the feasibility of expanding the database’s coverage to include transfers of SALW. An assessment of the availability of open source materials on SALW transfers to state armed forces, paramilitaries and rebel forces in Sub-Saharan Africa will be made in order to determine whether the information can be included in the database. This project will produce a final report assessing the feasibility of expanding the SIPRI Arms Transfer Database to include SALW and a series of background papers.
Background Papers
Background papers on international transfers of SALW to sub-Saharan Africa will provide information on international transfers of SALW to or from a particular state. The background papers will highlight examples of good and bad practice with regard to public transparency, and discuss the possible impact of arms flows on international peace and security in Africa.
