China and Global Security Programme
With this in mind, SIPRI established its China and Global Security Programme to advance contemporary China studies with a particular emphasis on China’s role and impact in global, non-traditional and transnational security.
Through comprehensive research, analysis, policy-relevant publications and other outputs, the Programme will analyse China’s transformation and help policymakers, opinion leaders, scholars, businesses and the general public more fully understand the foreign and security policy implications of China’s role.
With the expansion of the SIPRI China and Global Security Programme to include additional PhD-level researchers and full-time research assistants, SIPRI aims to be one of the largest and most internationally competent China programmes of any think tank in Europe—and one with a unique, well-established presence in China.
Research programme
The Programme undertakes research that combines SIPRI's long-standing focus on traditional security issues with an in-depth study of China's evolving international relations to understand the drivers which shape Chinese views and policies as an emerging global power. Our aim is to:
- Provide an excellent theoretical and intellectual basis from which to build a better understanding of China and formulate responses to Chinese foreign policy
- Carry out projects which build on Programme and SIPRI-wide expertise on China's foreign and security policy challenges, including:
- China's evolving relations with key countries and regions: Africa, Central Asia, Europe, East Asia and Russia
- China's approach to transnational security issues: energy security, climate security, climate change, peacekeeping and conflict resolution
- China's
role in traditional security concerns: arms trade, small arms,
military, expenditure, nuclear non-proliferation, and export controls
- Generate a strong output of authoritative research and publications in the form of books, research reports, policy briefs and op-eds
- Conduct high-profile outreach activities to further disseminate Programme findings through: conferences in Sweden, Europe, China and North America; briefings for government, business and non-governmental organizations; and regular updates to the Programme website
- Strengthen
Sweden-based expertise on contemporary China studies by facilitating
regular exchanges with Chinese academics and policymakers
