The private military services industry
SIPRI Insight No. 1

This report surveys the rapidly-growing military services sector of the arms industry, wherey private companies carry out a wide range of military activities from IT services to armed security on behalf of governments and other customers. The economic, political, and peace and security ramifications of the growing military outsourcing trend are discussed.

Transparency in Transfers of Small Arms and Light Weapons: Reports to the United Nations Register of Conventional Arms, 2003–2006

This report, which is the first study to document and analyse information on small arms and light weapon transfers reported to UNROCA for 2003–2006, was launched on 15 July at the Third Biennial Meeting of States on Small Arms and Light Weapons, United Nations, New York.

SIPRI Yearbook 2007 in Chinese


The Chinese version of SIPRI Yearbook 2007: Armaments, Disarmament and International Security was launched by the Chinese Arms Control and Disarmament Association (CACDA) in Beijing, China, on 8 May 2008. At the launch, SIPRI Director Dr Bates Gill delivered a key-note speech on ‘2008: A call to arms control’.

EU-27 Watch


The European research network EU-CONSENT, of which SIPRI is a member, published the latest edition of its biannual report, EU-27 Watch, in March 2008. Based on surveys in EU member and candidate states, it gives a comparative picture of debates on European integration and current developments in European politics. Topics discussed include:

  • The future of Europe at the end of the Portuguese Presidency
  • The Western Balkans and the enlargement agenda
  • The European Neighbourhood Policy (ENP) and Russia
